National Doughnut Day June 5

National Donut Day is June 5!

On Friday June 5, Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme and many other regional chains and one-off donut shops will be giving customers a delicious pastry, gratis.

Why are they doing it? It’s National Donut Day, of course, another one of those we-assumed-it-was-fake-until-we-asked-around holidays. According to the sage folks at Big Apple Donuts, National Donut Day began in 1938 as a way to raise funds during the depression. The Chicago Salvation Army was the organization that kicked it off, but now stores all over the country use the first Friday in June to stimulate business and thank customers. According to Dunkin’ Donuts marketing exec Frances Allen the day holds particular relevance this year. “Donuts are one of those foods that lift people's spirits and bring genuine delight to any situation. And now more than ever, Americans are seeking those small moments of happiness," says Allen.

How to Get Your Free Donut at Krispy Kreme:
Walk right in and ask! According to the Kreme, no purchase is necessary to receive your free donut on June 5, but they will of course limit you to one per customer. To find a participating store near you, visit the Krispy Kreme Web site.

How to Get Your Free Donut at Dunkin’ Donuts:
Dunkin’ Donuts is going to make you work a little harder for your free grub. At DD you’ll need to buy a beverage to qualify for that free donut on June 5, but like at Krispy Kreme it’s still one per customer. Also on National Donut Day, Dunkin' Donuts will announce the winner of its "Create Dunkin's Next Donut" contest. From nearly 130,000 donut contest creations submitted online, one finalist will win $12,000 and have their donut sold in Dunkin' Donuts across the country. Find your local Dunkin' Donuts on their Web site.
