Rutgers Day

Rutger's Day
Come Experience New Jersey's State University

Saturday, April 25
10am - 4pm
Rain or Shine

New Brunswick and Piscataway
Free Parking, Admissions and on-campus shuttles

Bursting with a lively mix of music, dance, contests, storytelling, lectures, demonstrations, and more, Rutgers Day celebrates a great university and a great state. It's big, it's fun, it's enlightening—and it's free.

Bring your family and friends for a day of discovery. There are hundreds of things for you to do and see. To help plan your day, check out the Rutgers Day program booklet online or you can pick it up when you arrive on campus.

On the Busch Campus
  • Phenomenal Faraday Physics

Find the fun in physics, whether you're 5 or 105. Flowers shatter like glass. Hydrogen balloons explode. A fire extinguisher rockets a person across the room. And that bed of nails—well, come see for yourself. Based on the popular children's lectures of 19th-century physicist Michael Faraday, this exciting show illustrates scientific principles while eliciting oohs and aahs. Come early—this popular event fills up fast!
  • Comic Strip Superstars

Think you're a real character? Then drop by the Allison Road Classroom (ARC) lab and create a comic strip with you in the starring role. Or get your picture taken in the photo booth. Rutgers IT staffers are on hand to help you create and print these Rutgers Day keepsakes.
  • CSI: Rutgers

Channel your favorite crime scene investigator (Sherlock Holmes? Horatio Caine?) using new-fangled forensics and old-fashioned police work. Dust for fingerprints, detect bloodstains, analyze hair samples, and test an eyewitness's memory. Kids can challenge their speed and strength in a law-enforcement obstacle course, while parents can obtain their children's fingerprints to keep on file.
  • Baby Geniuses: Infant Memory and Learning

Your baby can advance science! Drop by for a free balloon and have your baby's picture taken with a favorite children's character. While you're here, learn how you and your little one can contribute to our understanding of infant memory by participating in the Rutgers Early Learning Project.

On the College Avenue Campus
  • Face Painting

A lion? A tiger? A bear? Oh my! Children's faces become a canvas for their favorite creatures and characters. Bring your imagination—our face-painting artists will do the rest.
  • Children's Art Workshop

Create a masterpiece, inspired by artwork in the Zimmerli exhibits. We'll supply the art stations and materials for children to explore their creative genius, under the guidance of professional artists and art educators. Ages 5-13
  • New Jersey's Geological Time Machine

Step into the geological time machine—better known as the Rutgers University Geology Museum—and travel through the natural history of New Jersey. Treasures in the museum's collections include a dinosaur trackway from Towaco, a mastodon from Salem County, minerals from Paterson and Franklin—and a Ptolemaic-era mummy by way of Egypt. Missed the tour? No worry—the museum is open to visitors all day.
  • Wild West Storytelling

Ride the Oregon Trail with Pecos Bill, a.k.a. musical storyteller Richard Stillman. He's the rootin'est, tootin'est cowboy this side of the Raritan, mixing songs and stories of the Wild West with cowboy hat trickin', western rope spinnin', and country clog dancin'.
  • Part of the Story: Interactive Storytelling

Puppets, props, music, and more make storytelling extra special—especially when the audience joins in. Have fun as graduate students in early literacy use lively storytelling techniques to entertain adults and children alike. You'll also learn how storytelling enhances young children's language and reading skills.
  • Name that Primate!

Come explore the primate branch of your family tree. Listen to the calls of primates and try to match the sounds with their photos. Is it a lemur, a baboon, a chimpanzee, a gorilla? Come learn about the incredible world of primates from the Department of Anthropology.
  • Scarlet Chef: Decorating Mini-Cupcakes

Kids, try your hand at cake decorating with your own mini-cupcake. Members of the catering staff assist little bakers with tips, techniques, and lots of tasty decorating options. What can you do with your confectionary masterpiece? Do you need to ask?
On the Cook/Douglass Campus
  • Pictures with Puppies

Get a dose of puppy love and learn about "Seeing Eye" training. Meet a variety of cute pups and have your photo taken with one of these disarmingly charming creatures.
  • Have Fun on the Farm!

Experience the 38th annual Animal Shows sponsored by the Animal Science Department and the Society of Animal Sciences. Bring the kids to see our baby animals and tour the barns. Students will exhibit dairy cattle, goats, horses, pigs, and sheep.
  • Young Horse Research and Teaching Program

Learn about the Young Horse Research and Teaching Program and preview the yearling horses to be sold at auction on Sunday, April 26 at the Round House.
  • Sow a Seed 4-H

Children are the future, and so are plants! Plant a seed with the State 4-H Teen Council. Come join the fun of 4-H with plenty of hands-on activities for kids.
  • Farm Animal Petting Zoo

Bring the kids to visit our friendly farm animals. Touch and pet playful piglets, lovely lambs, and gracious goats. All animal/human interactions will be supervised by a Rutgers student.
  • SPARK (Summer Program at Rutgers for Kids)

Get ready to enter the world of wet, wild, icky, sticky, foamy, slimy, ooey, gooey chemistry. Roll up your sleeves and make some crazy concoctions. You will discover and explore new perspectives and engage in active and intellectual arenas, seeing everything through different eyes.
  • Hey, Pard'ner! Visit the Mounted Patrol Barn

What has six legs and is here to serve and protect Rutgers? A patrol person on a horse, of course. Meet the only student-run mounted patrol unit in the country at the Mounted Patrol Barn Open House.
